This might be a welcome surprise for all htpc’s users without cd- or dvd-player. The file posted below is a usblive version of the xbmc 10.00 beta2 release like found on xbmc.org. Enclosed in the zip file is a .img file which can be transfered to an usb-key with WinImage. Minimum requirement is a 1gb usb key.
Windows users:
- Use Image Writer to copy the img file to your usb device.
Linux and OSX users:
With the following commandline you can transfer the image to your usb device. Make sure the path and usb device is set correct!
dd if=/home/xbmc/xbmc-Dharma_beta2-usblive.img of=/dev/sdb

Wat ik niet goed begrijp is waarom deze USB-versie er is. Ik heb unstable beta2-iso met Unetbootin (kan op windows en linux) op mijn usbstick geschreven en vervolgens problemlos geinstalleerd op de SSD van mijn Zotac Zbox
Helaas crasht Grooveshark regelmatig, maar voor d e resst werkt het perfect
Why does my Shuttle XS35 keep landing at the login prompt instead of booting up into xbmc? I did not install it, just wanted to run it live from my usb drive.
I can login using xbmc/xbmc but how can I start the gui then?

Helaas doen niet alle versies van Unetbootin het goed. Verder zie ik ook een hoop problemen bij gebruikers met een Nvidia ION2 chipset. Om de een of andere reden werkt het booten vanaf een een usb, die gemaakt is met Unetbootin niet. Bij deze versie heb ik zelf geen problemen geconstateerd.

Heb je een idee waarom het geluid op mijn Zotac ZBOX HD-ID11 met Beta1 wel werkt als ik deze installeer via de Live versie en van alle opvolgende Beta2′s niet. Heb dan rare problemen dat MP3′s om en om het doen. Ik krijg dan “XBMC failed to initialize audio device checking your audio settings” bij het het afspelen van een MP3. Ook bij de Alsamixer heb ik alleen maar een Master, Front, Mic, Mic Boost S/PDIF en S/PDIF default en geeft aan dat ik een HDA Intel Card heb, Ook werkt het afspelen van AVI niet meer de haperen zo dat ze gewoon niet te kijken zijn, Ook dit gaat goed met de Beta1 Live CD
Why don’t you just make this an ISO like the rest? The .img file and using WinImage is retarded.

Acer-Revo still has login errors upon first and consecutive reboots. Unable to connect to default \\xbmclive via windows. Slightly more sluggish performance.

Was wondering what I was doing wrong with winimage. Still login issues? Will test from here also, if still a dud going back top full ubuntu o/s install.
Won’t boot for me using WinImage to write to my thumbdrive. All I get is an unknown filesystem error with grub. I’ll try the link with win32-image-writer and try it again. If that doesn’t work, I’ll just get the iso and go the unetbootin route.
It’s a miracle. The image boots using win32-image-writer. However, and most unfortunately wake on USB does not work, even with k/b & mouse. Time to throw the towel in. Seeya gents!
Just to remind you that all this stuff is still in beta, so you can expect things to work not the way you want.
Hi i wrote the image to the usb win32 disk imager. Everything seems to okay. but then booting it says this medium is not bootable. So thats happens. Can you please desribe a manual way to get a live usb stick?
The way it worked for me.
Unpack the downloaded file. Place the usb stick in a suitable slot, start “usb win32 disk imager”. Press the button with the tree “dots” en locate your unziped file. Make sure the drive letter in the right box is your usb-drive.
Then press the button with “write”, on the lower-right corner.
I needed to be Administrator to do this.
The only issues you can walk into ( where I can think of) is a wrong setting in your bios, corrupted file or try to use a other usb port. In my case only the first port can start a usb drive.
