Luigi and I are still working on the next XBMC Live version. One of the users asked me to post a list with the upcoming changes. As mention before Ubuntu has switched to the debian’s build-live system to create new iso and usb images. The plan is to use Ubuntu’s casper system and drop Debian live boot. This last thing is still a work in progress and isn’t going as smooth as we expected. Another thing we’re still looking at is to replace the “Debian installer” by Ubuntu’s Ubiquity installer. Another issue we’ve seen is that we’re reaching the 700mb iso limit. This means a lot of work has to be done!
Once we’ve solved all the issues mentioned before this is what you can expect. The next livecd will off course contain the next version of XBMC. These changes I won’t cover in this post. As for the live-cd, expect the following to come:
- Ubuntu 11.10 baseline (latest linux kernel 3.0, alsa 1.0.24, etc)
- Nvidia 280.13 drivers
- AMD Catalyst drivers (8.881)
- X-Video Bitstream Acceleration added, VA-API should work out of the box on all AMD platforms!
- Apple Filing Protocol client added
- Apple Airtunes and Airploy support added (libshairport)
- Uxlaunch has been replaced by Lightdm (faster boot)
- Rtmpdump 2.4 added
- NFS support added
- Pulse-Eight Libcec added

Fijn dat er zo hard aan gewerkt wordt!
Ik snap niet waarom alles nog op een cd moet passen terwijl iedereen wel een dvdtje of usbstick (van min 2gb) heeft liggen.
Ik heb liever een completere versie!
Ik werk altijd nog met de Dharma release, maar een nieuwe kernel zie ik wel zitten i.v.m. betere ondersteuning voor mijn afstandsbediening(en). Hebben we straks weer wat te doen tijdens de donkere dagen
Wat is het probleem van 700MB? Als we kunnen booten van een USB stick, dan is de limiet toch wat minder hard? Of is het meer prestige?
Niet om het een of ander, maar wat zit er allemaal in die 700+ MB als OpenELEC het afkan met zo’n 132MB (installed) qua systeempartitie? Die overige 570+MB zal toch niet allemaal overbodige Ubuntumeuk zijn, of zie ik iets over het hoofd?
Ik heb ook nooit echt begrepen waarom veel livecd concepten zich houden aan die 700MB. Iedereen heeft tegenwoordig beschikking over minstens een DVD lezer toch?
Desalniettemin is het jezelf stellen van limieten altijd goed om efficient te blijven.
Kan bijna niet wachten op het uitkomen van de Eden livecd
Heb zelf nog nooit mijn dvd speler gebruikt voor de installatie ( de lade is nog nooit open geweest), gebruik altijd usb stick van 2 gb.
Thx. If you’re interested and willing to help. Here’s a latest live version. This versions boots on my system and on another test user’s system as well. The version can either be burned on cd or be copied using unetbootin. Because I’m using syslinux unetbootin should work better with this release.

Note that the installer isn’t working and additional work has to be done on the syslinux/isolinux part. I’m struggling on the right set of parameters for syslinux. If you’re willing to help look at the isolinux or syslinux folder. There’s a file that’s called txt.cfg with the following contents:

The line with (see below) is responsible for booting up xbmc:

This is just my two cents but : drop the 700MB limit.
Every single CD player in the world (still working) is now a DVD player, and DVD-R aren’t much more expensive than CD-R.
I mean last time I saw a CD player for sale, that wasn’t also a DVD player, was in 2005…
I understand that you and all the other distro maintained the iso under 700MB for compatibility reasons and all, but it’s not critical anymore.
This is a constrain that you should free yourselves of, because you have other technical problems to deal with.
Like I said just my two cents, I’m not a programmer, or a maintainer, but if you do maintain the 700MB limit because you want people to be able to use CD-R, instead of DVD-R, I think you’re making your life more difficult for no reason.

Kijk nu al uit naar je volgende versie Piet Hein.
Denk je dat het vanaf dan wel mogelijk is om vloeiend avchd bestanden (1080p 50 frames per seconde) op een asrock ion 330 af te spelen, Of is deze hardware gewoon niet krachtig genoeg. De nieuwe sony camcorders kunnen nl. in deze resolutie opnemen, maar tijdens het afspelen verlies ik heel veel frames.

Ja die limiet van de cd mag je ook van mij droppen, usb sticks en dvdtjes heeft toch iedereen.. (en ook dvd players)
Hier mijn bevindingen met de laatste live versie
Na het downloaden, de versie met unetbootin op een usb stick gezet
Na het starten van het system kom ik terug in het installatie scherm en krijg ik de volgende melding
-Fatal: Error inserting vesafb (lib/modules/3.0.0-12-generic/kernel/drivers/video/vesafb.ko): No such device
Na het verwijderen video=vesafb uit het isolinux bestand :
Na het starten van het system kom ik terug in het installatie scherm en heb nu geen melding
Na het wijzigen van video=vesafb in vga=792 in het isolinux bestand :
Na het starten van het system krijg ik alleen een zwart scherm met cursor
Na het wijzigen van video=vesafb in vmalloc=512M in het isolinux bestand :
Na het starten van het system kom ik terug in het installatie scherm en heb nu geen melding
In alle bovenstaande gevallen loopt het system vast en kan ik alleen door hard reset de boel weer op gang krijgen

I am an amd e350 (asus deluxe) board owner, I did prepare few minimal ubuntu 11.10 with xbmc, but always i get many issues that take me too long to fix.
And as i am used to complicate things further than my knowledge (by installing linux apps), I am waiting for a stable and fully compatible xbmc eden to work out of the box with my system so I can mess up safety. As many others, I am one that prefer fresh re-install when i broke something
Im tired using Windows7, i am in rush, and I want many linux goodies. In this case, I need advice,
- should I wait for eden live?,
- or try your live expecting easy upgrade?,
- may mininal ubuntu with xbmc unestable oneiric packages, will be easy enough?
OFC, keeping in mind that the main task is playback through HDMI.

Try the Openelec Fusion version. It is not perfect (not 64 bit etc.) but it is the most smooth playing version i found. The only thing i have to create was an asound.conf to set the correct audio out. I also created a 11.10 64 bit with XBMC by myself, but i was having the same problems; to much little things to fix but so smooth playing… and be honest Piethein is much better in that

I’m currently running a Ubuntu 11.10 minimal x64 with xbmc from the expirimental repo on my Asrock ION 330HT. It’s as simple as installing ubuntu with ssh server and adding the appropriate nvidia and xbmc repositories. Including creating/copying a working .asoundrc for simultaneous HDMI and SPDIF sound it takes about 30 minutes to install and configure. Some 10 minutes more to install and configure sabnzbd and sickbeard. Nothing runs faster on my machine then this configuration.
correction: The team-xbmc ppa’s do not support oneiric yet. This ppa does -> https://launchpad.net/~nathan-renniewaldock
…obviously you’ll need some more packages like
- python-software-properties (for add-apt-repository)
- lirc (for your remote)
- uxlaunch (for the xbmc-live package)

@Edwin: Ive tried openelec, and works like a charm, but I dont know how to install packages. I dont even know if its possible at all. The thought of installing linux over windows is to install services as xlink, amule, jdownloader, X11… Furthermore, my xbox1 remote doesnt work out of the box. But im agree with you, is the best way to look at the future of MY linux playback
@Bram: Man! i can barely follow you. All those steps that you talk about scares me a lot. Really. Keep in mind that if “sudo apt-get install xxxx” dont work, Im lost, and I will spend a couple of days just to figure it out.

Graag de 290.10 Nvidia drivers includen ipv 280.13, gezien daar op Nvdia systemen met een 9300igp problemen zijn, drivers laden niet en x start niet. Dus veel mensen met bv een zotac 9300 board krijgen dan problemen, vanaf 290.10 is dit weer opgelost (net getest)

Heeft iemand een tutorial bij de hoe libshairport geinstalleerd moet worden? WIl dit wil heel graag in mijn huidige configuratie aan de praat krijgen.

I totally agree. I usually use a DVD+RW for both CD and DVD iso burns, and they work fine. I only need the burned image during install anyway (I usually install to a USB flash drive.)
I just wanted to second the motion. In my (completely humble) opinion, there’s no need to hold to the 700 MB limit.
